Travel

With a Parent Resident Visa, you can travel in and out of New Zealand as many times as you like until your travel conditions expire.

Your travel conditions expire 10 years from:

• the date you first arrive in New Zealand as a resident
• the date your visa is issued, if you are already in New Zealand.

To travel after that, you must:

• get a Permanent Resident Visa ( *during the last two years of your 10-year Parent Resident Visa, you must live in NZ for 184+ days per year) or
• extend your travel conditions, which would let you return to New Zealand at a later date.

Process

1. Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI).
2. Wait for selection.
3. Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
4. Lodge a residence application.
5. Residence granted if all requirements are met. 

Advantages

• Direct residence pathway.
• No investment requirement.
• Can ultimately obtain permanent residence and citizenship (subject to meeting future requirements). 

Disadvantages

• EOI selection system.
• Annual cap of 2,500 approvals.
• Sponsor income requirements can be challenging for some families. 

Option 2: Parent Boost Visitor Visa

Best for parents who want to spend significant time in New Zealand but do not necessarily want residence. 

Advantages

• Faster route than the Parent Resident Visa.
• No EOI process.
• Useful while waiting for a Parent Resident Visa opportunity.
• Lower threshold than the Parent Retirement Resident Visa. 

Disadvantages

• Does not lead directly to residence.
• Parents remain visitors.
• Ongoing compliance and visa conditions apply.

• NZD $1 million investment for 4 years.
• NZD $500,000 settlement funds.
• Minimum annual income of NZD $60,000.
• No dependent children.

• Residence pathway.
• No Parent Category EOI lottery.
• Faster option for wealthy families.

Disadvantages

• Significant financial thresholds.
• Investment funds must be transferred and maintained in New Zealand.
• Suitable for a relatively small client segment.
