Extend Your Stay in New Zealand

What are my options as I wish to extend my stay in New Zealand ?

AEWV holders who are approaching their end “Maximum Continuous Stay” (MCS) date in NZ must start planning for their future.

Their options are limited; however, for candidates nearing their end MCS date, you need to assess:

  1. Residence eligibility first.
  2. Partnership options.
  3. Whether the role can legitimately be reclassified into a 5-year MCS category.
  4. Whether a temporary visa can bridge them while a residence application is processed.
  5. If none of the above applies, then plan for the 12-month stand-down.

These pathways are outlined below with a special focus on the Partnership route:

1. Apply for Residence (best option)

If eligible, they can move to a resident visa, such as:

  • Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa via: Points Based Pathway; Trades & Technicians or Skilled Work Experience Pathways
  • Green List Straight to Residence
  • Green List Work to Residence
  • Care Workforce Work to Residence

2. Switch to Another Temporary Visa

Before MCS is reached, they may qualify for:

  • Partnership-based Work Visa*

*Partner eligible for AEWV

If your partner is able to secure an AEWV in their own right, you can obtain a Partnership Visa and extend your stay in New Zealand.

  • Partnership-based Visitor Visa
  • Student Visa
  • Visitor Visa
  • Specific Purpose Work Visa (if appropriate)

3. Move Into a Higher-Skilled Role Before MCS

Some migrants who originally had a 3-year MCS may be able to obtain a longer MCS if they move into:

  • ANZSCO/NOL Skill Level 1-3 employment
  • Green List occupations
  • Certain residence pathway occupations
  • Higher-paid roles meeting INZ thresholds.

If you wish to explore any of these options further, please don’t hesitate to contact me or Bernadette (Tagalog) for an obligation free consultation

Why choose New Zealand? Because an education here is shaped by more than what happens in the classroom. Here, New Zealand itself is part of the education.
